About our Berkeley masonry contractor crew

A wide concrete walkway with red brick edging leads across a green lawn to a brick-and-siding house.

How I came to masonry in Berkeley

I learned masonry under an old-school boss who made me redo a joint until it was right, then didn't say much when it finally was. I started Ironstone in Berkeley in 2021. Most of our calls here are about older brick and stone: worn joints, a tired chimney, a yard that needs a wall. We build new walls, chimneys, fireplaces and paving too, and the full list of what we do is on our home page.

I care about doing a job once, because masonry done badly gets expensive slowly. Bad mortar is patient that way. Berkeley sits close to major earthquake faults, which is one more reason I don't rush anything that has to stay standing. And I'd rather tell you a wall is fine than sell you work it doesn't need.

What you get when we take your job

These are the things you'll notice from the estimate on, from who shows up at your house to how much of your old brick and stone we leave alone.

  • The person at your estimate works on your job

I come out to look at the job myself, and I work alongside our crew when we build it. Nobody passes your job along to a stranger, so what you hear in your driveway is what gets built.

  • We repair what's worn and leave sound work alone

If most of your joints are solid, we don't grind them out to make the job bigger. You pay for the repair your house needs, and the good old mortar keeps doing its job.

  • A straight answer and the permit talk up front

You get a free estimate at your place, and sometimes the honest answer is that you don't need much. Berkeley's Permit Service Center issues building permits for most construction and repair work, so we talk that through with you before we start, and when your job needs a permit we handle the paperwork with the city.

Licensing and insurance for masonry in Berkeley

  • California contractor license

Licensed and fully insured. The state licensing board requires a contractor's license for work that needs a building permit, uses any extra workers or costs $1,000 or more in labor and materials, and the City of Berkeley adds its own business license for contractors working in the city, so both are fair questions for anyone you're thinking of hiring.
